FAQ

Common questions

I already owned the app before memberships were introduced. Do I have to pay?

No. If you downloaded Self Employed before memberships were introduced, you keep full access to every feature, free forever. No subscription, no paywall — just keep updating the app as usual.

If you ever see a membership screen anyway (for example after reinstalling or on a new device), make sure you're signed in to the App Store with the same Apple Account you originally downloaded the app with, then tap Restore Purchases. If it still doesn't recognise you, email selfemployedapp@gmail.com and it will be sorted out.

How do I restore my purchase or membership on a new device?
  1. Sign in to the App Store on the new device with the same Apple Account you used to buy the app or membership.
  2. Open Self Employed. If the membership screen appears, tap Restore Purchases.
  3. You can also restore at any time from the app's Business Tools & Settings → Subscription section.

Restoring works for Monthly, Annual, and Lifetime purchases, and for original users who are grandfathered in. Family Sharing follows Apple's rules for the purchase type.

How does the free trial work?

New users can start a 7-day free trial on the Monthly ($4.99/month) or Annual ($49.99/year) plan. You get every feature during the trial. If you cancel before the trial ends you won't be charged; otherwise the plan you chose begins automatically.

The Lifetime option ($149.99) is a one-time purchase with no trial and no renewals. All prices are in U.S. dollars and may vary by region.

How do I cancel or change my subscription?

Subscriptions are managed by Apple, not inside the app. On iPhone or iPad open Settings → your name → Subscriptions, or go directly to apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions. On a Mac, open the App Store, click your name, then Account Settings → Manage Subscriptions.

Cancelling stops future renewals; you keep access until the end of the current period.

How do backup and restore work?

Open Business Tools & Settings from the dashboard. From there you can create a backup file on demand, turn on automatic backups on a schedule, and restore from a backup file you saved elsewhere.

Backups are written atomically, so an interrupted backup never overwrites a good one. It's a good idea to make a manual backup before running End of Year, which archives the year's records and starts a clean slate for the new year (your checkbook, mileage log, and contractor records are kept).

Restoring replaces the app's current data with the contents of the backup, so restore only from a file you trust.

My data isn't syncing between devices.
  1. Make sure every device is signed in to the same Apple Account and that iCloud Drive is turned on.
  2. Check that Self Employed is allowed to use iCloud in Settings → your name → iCloud on each device.
  3. Give it a minute on a good network; open the app on both devices so they can exchange changes.

Sync is encrypted and handled entirely by Apple. If it's still stuck, email support with the devices involved and roughly when the changes were made.

How does mileage tracking use my location?

Location is only used while you're tracking a trip. You can live-track a route with GPS, or just log the start and end of a trip. Trips can also be started from the Apple Watch app or from CarPlay. Location data stays on your device and in your own iCloud — it is never sent to us.

If tracking doesn't start, check that Self Employed has location permission in Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services.

Do you collect any of my data?

No. Self Employed has no analytics, no ads, no tracking, and no accounts. Everything you enter lives on your device and, if you enable it, in your personal iCloud. Read the full Privacy Policy.

I found a bug or have a feature request.

Please send it to selfemployedapp@gmail.com. Bug reports are most useful with your device model, OS version, the steps to reproduce, and a screenshot. Feature requests shape what gets built next — the app is made by one self-employed developer who reads every message.
